Be Unconquerable

There's a line from Sun Tzu's The Art of War that has stuck with me for years:
"Being unconquerable lies with yourself."
The Art of War goes well beyond warfare. Its principles apply to almost every part of life. My takeaway from this one — and it keeps deepening the longer I train — is that no matter the situation, a person can choose to be unconquerable.
Psychology backs this up: life is largely perception. The same events can happen to two different people and produce wildly different outcomes depending on how each one chooses to perceive and respond.
Carl Jung famously said, "I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become."
Viktor Frankl, while being held in a Nazi internment camp during WWII, decided he would learn from the experience and one day teach it to his students — never knowing if he would actually make it out alive.
We learn from our circumstances, and we adapt.
Compared to what Frankl and others endured, most of us face nothing close. But the lesson holds. From Sun Tzu to Jung to Frankl, the message is the same: life is what you make of it, regardless of the circumstance. That's not to say times aren't hard. They are. But we can always learn from them and choose to be unconquerable.
How does that apply to martial arts, health, and fitness?
Easy. Humans were working out, training, and sharpening combat skills long before commercial dojos and gyms existed. Accountability, responsibility, and discipline don't come from a building — they come from you.
You don't need a dojo mat or a partner to drill combinations, footwork, or shadow-sm work. You don't need a gym to do push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and jumping jacks. And with the volume of free content on YouTube alone, you don't need any excuse not to keep your skills sharp between classes.
The only excuse you have is the one you give yourself.
It's easy to find reasons not to train. Work was long. Energy is low. It's a Monday. Some of those reasons are even valid. But the difference between people who progress and people who don't usually comes down to one thing: when life pushes back, which one do they look for — a way or a reason not to?
Be the one who finds the way. Be unconquerable.
