A Goal Without a Plan Is Just a Wish

A Goal Without a Plan Is Just a Wish

People with goals consistently outperform people without them. But not every "goal" is created equal. "Doing my best" is a nice idea — it's also directionless. Ambiguous goals lead to ambiguous results, which usually leads to dissatisfaction. Decide where you want to be. Look honestly at where you are right now. Know what it will look like when you arrive.

Here are three short ways to turn a vague intention into a real goal.

    1. Get Clear on Your Values

What do you actually value? Most people have never sat down to answer that question. Try writing a list of the things you genuinely value — and use that list to shape your goals.

If "friendship" shows up on your list, build goals around developing and maintaining friendships. Bring it into martial arts: what is it about training that you value? Health, fitness, sport, self-defense, skill, camaraderie? Pick what speaks to you, then build goals that connect to those values.

A few common core values to spark the list:

    Authenticity • Citizenship • Friendship • Knowledge • Poise • Spirituality Achievement • Community • Fun • Leadership • Popularity • Stability Adventure • Competency • Growth • Learning • Recognition • Success Authority • Contribution • Happiness • Love • Religion • Status Autonomy • Creativity • Honesty • Loyalty • Reputation • Trustworthiness Balance • Curiosity • Humor • Meaningful Work • Respect • Wealth Beauty • Determination • Influence • Openness • Responsibility • Wisdom Boldness • Fairness • Inner Harmony • Optimism • Security Compassion • Faith • Justice • Peace • Self-Respect Challenge • Fame • Kindness • Pleasure • Service

    2. Surround Yourself with the Right People

Goals don't get hit in isolation. Surround yourself with people who have similar goals. Social accountability and social support keep you on track in a way pure willpower can't. Avoid the chronic negativity people — they'll only pull you off course.

This is one of the underrated benefits of a dojo. You're walking into a room full of people who want to see you succeed. We help each other grow, and we grow ourselves in the process.

    3. Create SMART Goals

Rather than rewriting what plenty of others have written better, I'll point you to a solid breakdown of SMART goals here: MindTools — SMART Goals.

    The short version:

    • Specific — simple, sensible, significant.
    • Measurable — you can tell if you're moving toward it.
    • Achievable — challenging but attainable.
    • Relevant — it matters to you, and it fits the bigger picture.
    • Time-bound — there's a deadline, not just an "eventually."

Set the goal. Build the plan. Get to work.
